Adriano Espaillat is a Democrat and the first Dominican American and formerly undocumented immigrant elected to Congress, serving New York's 13th District since 2016.
Adriano de Jesus Espaillat Cabral, U.S. Representative for New York's 13th Congressional District, is a Democrat first elected in 2016 serving his fifth term representing upper Manhattan's Washington Heights, Inwood, Harlem, and Bronx portions. Born in the Dominican Republic and arriving in the United States at age nine, he made history as the first Dominican American elected to Congress and the first formerly undocumented immigrant to serve in Congress. Espaillat served in the New York State Assembly and State Senate before his congressional election. In the 119th Congress, he serves as a member of the House Appropriations Committee and Ranking Member of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee, becoming Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. He focuses on immigration, housing, education, and Latino community issues.
