Biography

Alma Adams is a Democratic U.S. Representative from North Carolina's 12th District, a former art professor with a doctorate from Ohio State and decades of experience in state government.

Alma Shealey Adams represents North Carolina's 12th Congressional District, a Democrat who won a November 2014 special election and is serving her sixth full term. Born in High Point, Adams earned degrees from North Carolina A&T State University and holds a doctorate from Ohio State University. She spent over four decades as an art professor at Bennett College in Greensboro and served in the Greensboro City Council and North Carolina House of Representatives for two decades before her congressional election. Adams is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan Historically Black Colleges and Universities Caucus and co-founder of the Black Maternal Health Caucus. She serves on the Education and the Workforce and Agriculture committees, focusing on HBCUs, nutrition programs, and workforce development.
