Biography

Ami Bera is a California Democratic congressman and physician representing the 6th District, ranking member of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific.

Amerish Babulal Bera represents California's 6th Congressional District, a Sacramento suburban district, as a Democrat first elected in 2012 and now serving his seventh term in the 119th Congress. Born in La Jolla to Indian immigrant parents, Bera earned bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of California, Irvine, and spent his career as an internal medicine physician, including serving as associate dean for admissions and outreach at UC Davis School of Medicine. He holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Indian American member of Congress. In the 119th Congress, Bera serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as ranking member of the Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, and also sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence with assignments to the Subcommittee on South and Central Asia. His legislative priorities focus on U.S. policy toward South and Southeast Asia, biomedical research advancement, strengthening the U.S.-India relationship, and technology policy, leveraging his medical background and expertise on Asian affairs to advance American interests in the region.
