Angela Alsobrooks is Maryland's junior Democratic senator, the first African American to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate, sworn in January 2025.
Angela D. Alsobrooks is the junior U.S. Senator from Maryland, a Democrat sworn in in January 2025 after winning the 2024 general election to succeed retiring Senator Ben Cardin. She is the first African American to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate. A Prince George's County native, Alsobrooks graduated from Duke University and the University of Maryland School of Law and worked as a prosecutor, eventually being elected State's Attorney for Prince George's County in 2010. In 2018 she became the first woman and second African American elected Prince George's County executive, leading one of Maryland's largest and most diverse jurisdictions through the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Senate she sits on Banking, Commerce, Health Education Labor and Pensions, Agriculture, and Ethics committees. She has emphasized public safety, economic opportunity, education, and expanding federal investment in the Washington, D.C. area, particularly in Maryland's suburban communities.
