Bennie Thompson is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Mississippi's 2nd District and ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee.
Bennie Gordon Thompson is the U.S. Representative for Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in a 1993 special election serving his seventeenth term representing the Mississippi Delta district stretching from Memphis suburbs to south of Jackson. A graduate of Tougaloo College and Jackson State University, Thompson was active in the civil rights movement and served as mayor of Bolton, Mississippi, and on the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. He chaired the House Homeland Security Committee from 2019 to 2023 and chaired the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. In the 119th Congress, he serves as ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, directing Democratic strategy on border security, emergency preparedness, and domestic security issues. His priorities include voting rights, rural development, and homeland security.
