Brian Emanuel Schatz is the junior U.S. Senator from Hawaii, a Democrat appointed in December 2012 to fill the vacancy left by Senator Daniel Inouye and subsequently elected in 2014, 2016, and 2022. A Pomona College graduate who led a Hawaii nonprofit focused on civic engagement, Schatz served in the Hawaii State House, as state Democratic Party chair, and as lieutenant governor under Neil Abercrombie before reaching the Senate. In the 119th Congress, he serves as Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs; he also sits on Commerce, Banking, Indian Affairs, and Ethics. He has been one of the Senate's most persistent voices on climate change, and in 2025 worked to secure more than $1 billion for Hawaii to support Maui's recovery and expand broadband access. Schatz has also focused on telehealth, housing affordability, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander policy.
