Chuck Schumer is New York's senior Democratic senator and Senate Democratic Leader, serving in the chamber since 1999 with focus on constituent service and legislative negotiation.
Charles Ellis Schumer is the senior U.S. Senator from New York, a Democrat first elected in 1998 after nine House terms representing a Brooklyn-based district, and re-elected in 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2022. A Brooklyn native and Harvard College and Law graduate, Schumer was elected to the New York State Assembly at age 23 and has been in public office continuously since. He serves as Senate Democratic Leader, having assumed the position in 2017, and served as Senate majority leader from 2021 through 2024 and again beginning in 2025 depending on session balance. He sits on Finance, Judiciary, Rules, and Agriculture committees. Known for intense focus on New York constituent service and skills as a legislative tactician, Schumer has been central to negotiations on the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, the bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and gun safety measures. He continues to be a leading architect of Democratic legislative strategy.
