Derek Schmidt (R-KS-2) is a former Kansas attorney general and state senator, first elected to the House in 2024.
Derek Schmidt is the U.S. Representative for Kansas's 2nd Congressional District, a Republican first elected in 2024 and serving his first term. A graduate of the University of Kansas, University of Leicester, and Georgetown University Law Center, Schmidt worked as a congressional aide and assistant attorney general before serving in the Kansas State Senate, including as majority leader. He was elected Kansas attorney general in 2010 and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022 before winning the U.S. House seat two years later. The district includes Topeka, Lawrence, and Fort Leavenworth. In the 119th Congress, he serves on the House Armed Services, Judiciary, and Small Business committees, focusing on agriculture, veterans and military installations, and constitutional rule-of-law issues.
