Eric Schmitt is a Republican Missouri senator and former state attorney general known for litigation over regulatory and social policy issues.
Eric Stephen Schmitt serves as the senior U.S. Senator from Missouri, a Republican elected in 2022 to succeed retiring Roy Blunt. A St. Louis native and graduate of Truman State and St. Louis University School of Law, Schmitt practiced law and served in the Missouri State Senate before winning election as Missouri state treasurer in 2016 and being appointed Missouri attorney general in 2019, a position to which he was elected in 2020. As attorney general, he filed numerous lawsuits against federal agencies and became nationally known for litigation over school masking, social media content moderation, and federal regulatory policies. In the 119th Congress, Schmitt serves on the Armed Services, Commerce, and Judiciary committees, chairing the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and serving as Vice Chair of the Joint Economic Committee. He has secured significant funding for Missouri military installations through defense appropriations and the National Defense Authorization Act, and has focused on border security, First Amendment protections, the Missouri defense and agricultural economies, and opposition to federal regulatory overreach.
