Frederica Smith Wilson is the U.S. Representative for Florida's 24th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2010 and currently serving her eighth term representing a majority-Black Miami-Dade County and Broward County district including much of north-central Miami-Dade. A graduate of Fisk University with a B.A. in Elementary Education and the University of Miami with an M.A. in Elementary Education, Wilson served as a principal in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and founded the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project in 1993, an in-school mentoring program pairing minority male students in grades 3-12 with adult male mentors to promote academic success. She served in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate before entering Congress. Internationally recognized for her distinctive and often sequined cowboy hats, Wilson has amassed a collection of several hundred hats symbolizing her unique style and public presence. In the 119th Congress, she serves as Ranking Democrat on the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and on the Education and the Workforce Committee, focusing on education, workforce development, and the Haitian and Caribbean American community.
