Herb Conaway is a Democratic U.S. Representative from New Jersey's 3rd District, a physician and attorney who became the first Black physician with voting privileges in Congress.
Herbert C. Conaway Jr. represents New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District as a Democrat elected in 2024 to succeed Senator Andy Kim. A graduate of Princeton University, Jefferson Medical College, and Rutgers Law School, Conaway is a practicing physician and attorney who served in the New Jersey General Assembly for twenty-seven years, chairing the Health Committee. He served in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of Captain in the Medical Corps at McGuire Air Force Base. His district encompasses nearly all of Burlington County and parts of Mercer and Monmouth counties, including Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Conaway focuses on healthcare, veterans issues, and military base support. He became the first Black physician with voting privileges to serve in Congress.
