Biography

Jim Risch is Idaho's Republican senator and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, serving in the chamber since 2008.

James Elroy Risch is the junior U.S. Senator from Idaho, a Republican first elected to the Senate in 2008 and re-elected in 2014 and 2020. A lawyer and rancher from Boise, Risch served for decades in the Idaho State Senate, including multiple stints as its president pro tempore, and was briefly governor of Idaho in 2006 after Governor Dirk Kempthorne joined the George W. Bush cabinet. In the 119th Congress, he chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and sits on Intelligence, Energy and Natural Resources, Small Business, and Ethics. As Foreign Relations chairman in 2025, Risch has addressed critical U.S. policy concerns including Iran, China, Russia, and the Middle East. He has also focused on public-lands management in the Mountain West and nuclear energy research at the Idaho National Laboratory. Risch is a leading Republican voice on foreign policy and has been active in overseeing sensitive national security issues.
