Jason Thomas Smith is the U.S. Representative for Missouri's 8th Congressional District, a Republican first elected in a 2013 special election serving his seventh term representing a large southeast Missouri district covering the Ozarks, the Bootheel, and the Mississippi River bluffs. A University of Missouri and Oklahoma City University School of Law graduate, Smith worked as an attorney and served in the Missouri House of Representatives as majority whip and assistant majority leader. In the 119th Congress, he chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, making him the powerful architect of federal tax policy, trade policy, and Social Security and Medicare matters. At 42, Smith is the youngest modern chair of Ways and Means and the first Missourian to lead the committee since 1859. His priorities include tax policy, trade, rural healthcare, agriculture, and conservative economic policy.
