Jeanne Shaheen is a Democratic New Hampshire senator, the first woman elected both governor and U.S. senator, serving her third Senate term.
Cynthia Jeanne Shaheen serves as the senior U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, a Democrat first elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2014 and 2020. Born in St. Charles, Missouri, Shaheen earned degrees from Shippensburg University and the University of Mississippi and worked as a high-school teacher and small-business owner before becoming a leading New Hampshire political operative. She served in the New Hampshire State Senate and then as governor of New Hampshire from 1997 to 2003, becoming the first woman elected governor of the state. In 2008, she defeated Republican incumbent John Sununu to become the first woman in U.S. history elected both governor and senator. In the Senate, Shaheen sits on Foreign Relations, Appropriations, Armed Services, and Small Business committees, focusing on U.S. policy toward Ukraine, Europe, and Afghanistan, energy efficiency, and reproductive rights. In March 2025, she announced she would not seek a fourth term in 2026 after 30 years in electoral politics, though she pledged to serve her remaining years with full dedication to New Hampshire.
