Jeff Merkley is Oregon's senior Democratic senator and leading progressive voice on housing, filibuster reform, and climate, serving his third term.
Jeffrey Alan Merkley is the senior U.S. Senator from Oregon, a Democrat first elected in 2008 by defeating Republican incumbent Gordon Smith and re-elected in 2014 and 2020. A Myrtle Creek, Oregon native and graduate of Stanford and Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School, Merkley worked as a national-security analyst at the Pentagon and Congressional Budget Office, led Habitat for Humanity in Portland, and served as speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives before winning his Senate seat. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Appropriations, Environment and Public Works, Foreign Relations, Budget, and Rules committees, holding ranking member positions on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee and the Environmental Justice Subcommittee. He has been a leading voice on housing affordability, filibuster reform, climate change, and human rights in Xinjiang and Myanmar. Merkley maintains a focus on vulnerable populations, environmental protection, and foreign policy. He announced in 2025 that he would not seek a fourth term, ensuring he can focus on legislative priorities through the end of the Congress.
