Joe Neguse is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Colorado's 2nd District, House Assistant Minority Leader, and the first Eritrean American in Congress.
Joseph D. Neguse is the U.S. Representative for Colorado's 2nd Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2018 and currently serving his fourth term. The son of Eritrean refugees, Neguse graduated from the University of Colorado and its law school and worked as a consumer protection attorney. He served on the University of Colorado Board of Regents and as Colorado executive director of regulatory agencies under Governor John Hickenlooper. He served as an impeachment manager during the second trial of President Donald Trump. In March 2024, Neguse was unanimously elected House Assistant Minority Leader, becoming the first senior House Democratic leader from Colorado in nearly ninety years. In the 119th Congress, he serves on the Rules, Judiciary, and Natural Resources committees and is ranking member of the Federal Lands Subcommittee. According to the Center for Effective Lawmaking, he was identified in March 2025 as the second most effective House Democrat. His priorities include public lands conservation, wildfire response and prevention, and protecting democratic institutions.
