Biography

Joe Wilson is a Republican U.S. Representative from South Carolina's 2nd District, retired Army National Guard colonel, and chair of the Helsinki Commission.

Addison Graves 'Joe' Wilson Sr. represents South Carolina's 2nd Congressional District, a Republican who won a December 2001 special election and serves his twelfth full term covering Columbia's suburbs and Fort Jackson. A graduate of Washington and Lee University and University of South Carolina Law School, Wilson is a retired colonel in the South Carolina Army National Guard who served in the state Senate. He gained national notoriety in 2009 when he shouted 'You lie!' during President Obama's joint session healthcare speech. In the 119th Congress, he serves as chair of the Helsinki Commission and sits on Armed Services (Readiness and Strategic Forces subcommittees) and Education and Workforce committees. He chairs the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, focusing on Israel, Ukraine, and military issues.
