Biography

John Barrasso is the senior U.S. Senator from Wyoming, Senate Republican Whip in the 119th Congress, a former orthopedic surgeon.

John Anthony Barrasso III, Wyoming's senior senator since 2007, combines medical expertise with Republican leadership in the chamber as Senate Republican Whip. A Reading, Pennsylvania, native, Barrasso graduated from Georgetown University and Georgetown School of Medicine and practiced orthopedic surgery in Casper, Wyoming, for nearly 25 years before entering politics. He served in the Wyoming State Senate before being appointed to fill Craig Thomas's Senate seat in June 2007 and was subsequently elected in a 2008 special election and to full terms in 2012, 2018, and 2024. In November 2024, the Senate Republican Conference elected him as Senate Republican Whip, the number-two Republican leadership position in the 119th Congress. Barrasso has chaired the Senate Republican Conference, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and the Indian Affairs Committee. His priorities include domestic energy production and public lands management, health-care pricing policy, and tribal relations. He remains a central figure in Republican legislative strategy and energy policy.
