United States Senator from TX

John Cornyn is the senior U.S. Senator from Texas, a former state Supreme Court justice and Republican whip serving his fourth term.
John Cornyn III, Texas's senior senator since 2003, has been a senior Republican voice on judicial and national security matters throughout his tenure. A Houston native educated at Trinity University, St. Mary's University School of Law, and the University of Virginia, Cornyn served as a Texas district judge, Texas Supreme Court justice, and Texas attorney general before entering the Senate. He served as Senate Majority and then Minority Whip from 2013 to 2019, establishing himself as a skilled legislative operator. Cornyn was the chief Republican negotiator on the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major federal gun-safety legislation in nearly three decades. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Finance, Judiciary, Intelligence, Foreign Relations, and Budget committees. Though he pursued the Senate Republican leadership position in 2024, finishing behind John Thune, Cornyn remains a central figure in Republican legislative strategy and judicial confirmation battles.
