John Fetterman is Pennsylvania's senior Democratic senator and former Braddock mayor and lieutenant governor, known for his unconventional style and strong labor advocacy.
John Karl Fetterman is the senior U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, a Democrat elected in 2022 by defeating Republican Mehmet Oz in the race to succeed retiring Pat Toomey. A York, Pennsylvania native, Fetterman earned degrees from Albright College, the University of Connecticut, and Harvard's Kennedy School, served in AmeriCorps, and was elected mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania in 2005, where he gained national attention for his tattoos, informal style, and focus on urban revitalization of this post-industrial borough outside Pittsburgh. He served as Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023 before his Senate run. Fetterman suffered a stroke during the 2022 campaign but continued and won. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. He focuses on steel and union labor, food security and SNAP expansion, and infrastructure investment. He is a member of the Senate Mental Health Caucus and has drawn attention for idiosyncratic and sometimes contrarian positions, including strong support for Israel.
