United States Senator from CO

John Hickenlooper is Colorado's junior Democratic senator since 2020, a former Denver mayor and two-term governor with a geologist's background and brewpub founder.
John Wright Hickenlooper, a Democrat elected in 2020 after defeating Republican Cory Gardner, brought a unique blend of scientific training and entrepreneurial experience to the Senate. Educated as a geologist, Hickenlooper co-founded Wynkoop Brewing Company, which helped spark downtown Denver's revitalization, served as Denver mayor from 2003 to 2011, and governed Colorado from 2011 to 2019, navigating mass shootings, wildfires, marijuana legalization, and energy transition challenges. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Commerce, Energy and Natural Resources, HELP, Small Business, and the Joint Economic Committee, focusing on clean energy, outdoor recreation, and mental health. Hickenlooper was instrumental in negotiating the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest climate investment in U.S. history, which has directed over $1.7 billion in investments to Colorado. In 2025, he introduced the Co-Location Energy Act with Senator John Curtis to streamline permitting for renewable energy projects on federal lands and co-sponsored the Fix Our Forests Act.
