John Kennedy is Louisiana's junior Republican senator, a former state treasurer and ranking member of the Appropriations Energy and Water Subcommittee.
John Neely Kennedy is the junior U.S. Senator from Louisiana, a Republican first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2022. A native of Centreville, Mississippi, and Zachary, Louisiana, Kennedy holds degrees from Vanderbilt, the University of Virginia School of Law, and Oxford, and spent the early part of his career in private law practice and as a state cabinet official in several Louisiana gubernatorial administrations. He served as Louisiana's state treasurer from 2000 to 2017, initially as a Democrat before switching parties. In the 119th Congress, Kennedy sits on the Appropriations, Banking, Budget, and Judiciary committees, and chairs the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee. He also serves as ranking member of the Banking Subcommittee on Economic Policy. Kennedy is known for his distinctive folksy rhetorical style during committee hearings and floor speeches, and his policy focus includes tax policy, financial regulation, judicial nominations, Louisiana flood and coastal issues, and fiscal oversight.
