Biography

John McGuire is a Republican U.S. Representative from Virginia's 5th District, a retired Navy SEAL elected in 2024.

John Joseph McGuire III is the U.S. Representative for Virginia's 5th Congressional District, serving since January 2025. A retired U.S. Navy SEAL with ten years of active service including multiple overseas deployments, advanced training as a sniper, and instructor certifications, McGuire earned degrees from Liberty University and Virginia Commonwealth University. After leaving military service, he founded a fitness business and subsequently entered Virginia politics. McGuire served in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly before his 2024 congressional election, during which he defeated incumbent Bob Good in a closely watched Republican primary notable for its 2024 presidential politics. He represents a vast district stretching from Richmond's suburbs through central Virginia to the North Carolina border. McGuire sits on the House Armed Services Committee and the Oversight and Accountability Committee, bringing military perspective to defense and governance issues.
