Jack Reed is Rhode Island's senior Democratic senator and ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, a West Point graduate serving his fifth term.
John Francis Reed is the senior U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, a Democrat first elected in 1996 and re-elected in 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2020. A Cranston, Rhode Island native, Reed graduated from West Point, served eight years on active duty as a U.S. Army Ranger and paratrooper, and earned a master's from Harvard's Kennedy School and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He served in the Rhode Island State Senate and for three terms in the U.S. House before winning his Senate seat. In the 119th Congress, Reed is the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and serves on Appropriations, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and Intelligence. He also holds ranking member status on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government. Reed is one of the most influential Democratic voices on defense policy, including staunch support for Ukraine and U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, and maintains close oversight of Naval Station Newport and submarine construction. He focuses on housing and homelessness and remains engaged in military readiness and force modernization issues.
