Juan Vargas is a Democratic U.S. Representative from California's 52nd District, a former Jesuit seminarian, and a leading voice on border and U.S.–Latin America issues.
Juan C. Vargas is the U.S. Representative for California's 52nd Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2012 and currently serving his seventh term. The son of Mexican immigrant farmworkers, Vargas trained as a Jesuit seminarian and earned degrees from the University of San Diego, Fordham, and Harvard Law School. He served on the San Diego City Council, in the California State Assembly, and in the California State Senate, and worked as an executive at an insurance company before entering Congress. In the 119th Congress, he serves on the Agriculture Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee, where he addresses Middle East and North Africa policy and terrorism and nonproliferation issues. He also serves on the House Administration Committee. His legislative priorities include comprehensive immigration reform, protecting border communities, strengthening U.S.–Latin America relations and trade, and advancing financial services policy. Vargas is a recognized Democratic voice on border issues, Latin American relations, and immigration reform with deep expertise from his San Diego–Imperial Valley constituency.
