United States Senator from DE

Lisa Blunt Rochester is Delaware's junior Democratic senator since January 2025, the state's first woman and first Black senator, focusing on maternal health and clean energy.
Lisa Blunt Rochester, a Democrat sworn in January 2025, made history as Delaware's first woman and first African American senator. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Wilmington, Blunt Rochester served in several Delaware state positions including state secretary of labor and deputy secretary of health and social services before her first election to the U.S. House in 2016, becoming the first woman and first person of color to represent Delaware in Congress. After four House terms, she successfully ran for the Senate seat vacated by Tom Carper's retirement. In the 119th Congress, she serves on HELP, Banking, Agriculture, and Small Business committees, where she champions maternal health, advocating to protect Medicaid's critical role in funding more than 40 percent of births nationwide, particularly in rural communities. A member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, Blunt Rochester proposed amendments to protect against Medicaid cuts and continues focusing on financial inclusion, workforce training, and clean energy transition for Delaware working families.
