Mark Warner is the senior U.S. Senator from Virginia, a Democrat and former governor who serves as vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Mark Robert Warner, Virginia's senior senator since 2009, combines business acumen with bipartisan legislative work on security and economic issues. An Indianapolis native who attended George Washington University and Harvard Law School, Warner left law practice for venture capital, helping launch Nextel and becoming a wealthy telecommunications investor before politics. He served as Virginia Democratic Party chair and as governor from 2002 to 2006, establishing himself as a centrist, business-friendly Democrat. In the Senate, Warner serves as vice chair of the Select Committee on Intelligence, the principal bipartisan body overseeing U.S. intelligence agencies, and also serves on Finance, Banking, Budget, and Rules. Re-elected in 2008, 2014, and 2020, he has focused on cybersecurity threats, financial regulation, small-business policy, rural broadband expansion, and federal workforce issues.
