Michael Baumgartner is a Republican U.S. Representative from Washington's 5th District, a former state senator and U.S. diplomat specializing in anti-corruption.
Michael Baumgartner is the U.S. Representative for Washington's 5th Congressional District, a Republican elected in 2024 to succeed Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who retired. A graduate of Washington State University and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Baumgartner served as a U.S. diplomat in Iraq and Afghanistan, working on anti-corruption and anti-narcotics programs at the State Department. He served three terms in the Washington State Senate representing the 6th district from 2011 to 2019, and subsequently served as Spokane County Treasurer from 2019 to 2025. He represents eastern Washington including Spokane and focuses on healthcare, agriculture, and foreign policy, bringing extensive experience in international development and governance reform to his committee work.
