Michael Farrand Bennet, a Democrat originally appointed to the Senate in January 2009 and subsequently elected in 2010, 2016, and 2022, represents Colorado's senior seat. A Yale Law graduate who clerked for a federal appeals judge, Bennet worked in the Clinton Justice Department and private equity before serving as chief of staff to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and superintendent of Denver Public Schools. As a senior member of the Finance Committee where he chairs the Taxation and IRS Oversight Subcommittee, Bennet is best known for championing an expanded Child Tax Credit, having led 44 Senate colleagues in reintroducing the American Family Act in 2025 to increase credits up to $6,360 for newborns. In April 2025, he announced his intention to run for Colorado governor, maintaining focus on both federal advocacy and state-level economic development.
