Biography

Mike Thompson is a California Democratic congressman, Vietnam veteran, and senior member of the Ways and Means Committee representing Wine Country since 1998.

Charles Michael Thompson represents California's 4th Congressional District, a Northern California Wine Country district including all or parts of Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo counties. First elected in 1998, Thompson is now serving his fourteenth term and was reelected to the 119th Congress. A St. Helena, Napa Valley, native, Thompson is a decorated Vietnam War veteran who served as a U.S. Army staff sergeant and platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, earning the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge. After military service, he worked as a small-business owner and vineyard worker while earning degrees from California State University, Chico, and served in the California State Senate before winning election to Congress. In the U.S. House, Thompson sits on the powerful Ways and Means Committee as a senior member, serving as ranking member of the Tax Subcommittee and as a senior member of the Health Subcommittee. He chairs the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and champions background checks and related firearms legislation. His priorities include wine industry advocacy, agriculture, veterans' issues, and the federal tax code.
