United States Senator from KY

Mitch McConnell is Kentucky's senior Republican senator, the longest-serving party leader in Senate history and a former Senate Republican leader stepping down in 2026.
Addison Mitchell McConnell III is the senior U.S. Senator from Kentucky, a Republican first elected in 1984 and now serving his seventh term after winning re-election in 2020. A native of Alabama who grew up partly in Athens and partly in Louisville, McConnell graduated from the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky College of Law. He worked on the staff of Kentucky Senator Marlow Cook, served as a deputy assistant attorney general under President Ford, and was elected Jefferson County judge-executive before winning his Senate seat. He led Senate Republicans from 2007 through the end of 2024, the longest tenure of any party leader in Senate history, presiding over the confirmations of three Supreme Court justices. In the 119th Congress, McConnell serves on Appropriations, Agriculture, and Rules, and chairs the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. He stepped down as Senate Republican leader in January 2025 and announced in February 2025 that he would not run for an eighth term in 2026.
