Biography

Rashida Tlaib is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Michigan's 12th District, the first Palestinian American woman elected to Congress and progressive 'Squad' member.

Rashida Tlaib is the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 12th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2018 and currently serving her fourth term. She represents a southeast Michigan district covering parts of Detroit, Dearborn, and Downriver suburbs. The eldest of fourteen children of Palestinian immigrants, Tlaib grew up in Detroit and graduated from Wayne State University and Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She worked as an immigration attorney and served in the Michigan House of Representatives, becoming the first Muslim woman in that chamber's history. Along with Ilhan Omar, she was among the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. A member of the progressive 'Squad,' she serves on the House Financial Services Committee with assignment to Housing and Insurance, and focuses on housing, Palestinian rights, and U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
