United States Senator from CT

Richard Blumenthal is Connecticut's senior Democratic senator since 2010, a former longtime state attorney general who champions consumer protection and gun safety.
Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat first elected in 2010 to succeed Christopher Dodd and re-elected in 2016 and 2022, brings extensive consumer protection experience from his tenure as Connecticut's attorney general. A Harvard and Yale Law graduate and former Supreme Court clerk to Justice Harry Blackmun, Blumenthal served as a Marine Corps reservist and U.S. attorney before spending two decades as Connecticut's attorney general, where he built a national reputation for consumer protection litigation and tobacco settlement work. He chairs the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, serving on Veterans' Affairs, Judiciary, Commerce, and Armed Services committees. In 2025, Blumenthal led 21 Senate and 27 House members in calling on the Trump administration to reverse plans to eliminate the Consumer Product Safety Commission, arguing it saves more lives than any federal agency. His advocacy continues to focus on consumer safety, Sandy Hook-related gun violence prevention, social media regulation and child online safety, and Connecticut's defense contracting interests.
