Ron Wyden is Oregon's junior Democratic senator and ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, serving since 1996 with focus on tax policy, surveillance, and internet freedom.
Ronald Lee Wyden is the junior U.S. Senator from Oregon, a Democrat first elected in a 1996 special election to fill the seat vacated by Bob Packwood, and re-elected in 1998, 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2022. Born in Wichita, Kansas to parents who fled Nazi Germany, Wyden grew up in Palo Alto, California and moved to Oregon to attend law school at the University of Oregon after graduating from Stanford. He co-founded the Oregon chapter of the Gray Panthers and worked on senior issues before being elected to the U.S. House in 1980, where he served 15 years representing a Portland-area district. In the 119th Congress, Wyden is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee and serves on Intelligence, Energy and Natural Resources, and Budget. He is widely known for his rigorous work on tax policy, health care reform, federal surveillance oversight and internet freedom. Wyden has been a persistent advocate for privacy rights and government transparency, and remains a senior voice on fiscal policy and the social safety net. He was honored as the 2025 National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials Legislator of the Year.
