Sarah Elizabeth McBride is the U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2024 serving her first term as Delaware's single House member. A graduate of American University, McBride became the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party national convention when she addressed the 2016 Democratic National Convention as an advocate for the Human Rights Campaign, where she served as national press secretary. In 2020, she made history as the first openly transgender person elected to the Delaware State Senate, where she authored the Healthy Delaware Families Act, establishing a paid family and medical leave program. She became the first openly transgender person elected to Congress in November 2024. Her legislative priorities include expanding healthcare access, protecting paid leave rights, advancing gun-safety measures, and creating economic opportunity for working families.
