Shelley Moore Capito is the senior U.S. Senator from West Virginia, the first woman elected to that office, serving her second full term.
Shelley Wellons Moore Capito, West Virginia's senior senator since 2015, has been a leading advocate for Appalachian economic development and environmental protection. The daughter of three-term West Virginia Governor Arch Moore, Capito graduated from Duke and the University of Virginia and worked in education and small business before winning election to the West Virginia House of Delegates. She served seven terms in the U.S. House from 2001 to 2015, making history as the first woman ever elected to the Senate from West Virginia. In the Senate, she was elected in 2014, defeating Democrat Natalie Tennant, and was re-elected in 2020. She chairs the Environment and Public Works Committee in the 119th Congress and also sits on Appropriations, Commerce, and Rules committees. Capito has focused on broadband expansion, coal and energy policy, addressing the opioid crisis affecting her state, and infrastructure investment in Appalachian communities. She announced her intention to seek re-election in 2026, positioning herself as dean of West Virginia's congressional delegation.
