Shomari Coleman Figures is the U.S. representative for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, a Democrat sworn in January 2025 as the first member elected from the redrawn district created to ensure fair representation under the Voting Rights Act. A Mobile native with degrees from the University of Alabama and its law school, Figures is the son of Alabama state senator Vivian Davis Figures. He clerked for a federal judge, worked on President Obama's re-election campaign, and served in the Obama administration at the Department of Justice, where he eventually became Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland, overseeing civil rights, immigration, and law enforcement matters. He also served as Senate staff for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. In the House, Figures prioritizes voting rights legislation, civil rights protections, economic development in Alabama's rural Black Belt region, and federal infrastructure investment in Mobile's port and workforce training initiatives.
