Shri Thanedar is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Michigan's 13th District, an Indian-born chemist and entrepreneur representing Detroit and eastern suburbs.
Shri Thanedar is the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 13th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2022 and currently serving his second term. He represents a district covering much of Detroit and its eastern suburbs including Grosse Pointe, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. Born in Belgaum, India, Thanedar earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Akron and built and sold several chemical and pharmaceutical testing companies in Missouri before moving to Michigan. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 2018 Democratic primary and served one term in the Michigan House of Representatives before winning his U.S. House seat. In the 119th Congress, he serves on the House Agriculture Committee and Homeland Security Committee as top Democrat on the Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Subcommittee, focusing on small business, economic opportunity, and Detroit revitalization.
