Steve Cohen is a Democrat from Tennessee's 9th District, a civil rights advocate serving his eleventh term representing Memphis and the only Jewish member of Congress from Tennessee.
Stephen Ira Cohen is the U.S. Representative for Tennessee's 9th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2006 serving his eleventh term. A native of Memphis, Cohen graduated from Vanderbilt University and received his law degree from the University of Memphis School of Law in 1973. He worked as a private-practice attorney and served as a Tennessee State Senator for 24 years before his congressional election. His district covers most of Memphis and surrounding areas and is majority-Black. As the only Jewish member of Congress from Tennessee, Cohen sits on the House Judiciary Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and chairs the Helsinki Commission's House delegation. He has focused heavily on civil rights, voting rights, and human rights in Europe and Central Asia, securing substantial federal funding for transit infrastructure and neighborhood redevelopment in Memphis.
