Born in Bangkok to a Thai mother and an American father, Duckworth joined the Illinois Army National Guard and became a Black Hawk helicopter pilot; in 2004 her aircraft was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade in Iraq, costing her both legs and partial use of her right arm. She retired as a lieutenant colonel. Duckworth later served as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, as an assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs under President Obama, and for two terms in the U.S. House before running for Senate. In the 119th Congress, she serves on Armed Services, Commerce, Environment and Public Works, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and chairs the Aviation Safety, Operations and Innovation Subcommittee. She has focused on veterans' issues, disability rights, aviation safety, and working parents, and was the first senator to give birth in office.
