Biography

Teresa Leger Fernández is a tribal law attorney from northern New Mexico serving as ranking member of the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee and Democratic Women's Caucus chair.

Teresa Leger Fernández represents New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District covering northern New Mexico including Santa Fe, Farmington, and rural areas with significant Indigenous and Hispanic populations. A Yale and Stanford Law School graduate, she built a distinguished legal career specializing in tribal law, voting rights, and community development while representing Pueblo tribes and advocating for affordable housing. In the 119th Congress, Leger Fernández serves on the House Natural Resources Committee as ranking member of the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee, and holds a powerful seat on the House Rules Committee as one of only four Democrats. She was elected chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus, representing a record-breaking 96 members. Her legislative focus emphasizes tribal sovereignty, Indigenous land and water rights, Hispanic heritage preservation, and rural healthcare access in New Mexico's economically and culturally distinctive region.
